Orthopedic Acupuncture in Broken Arrow: How It Helps Relieve Pain
If you’re struggling with back pain, sciatica, or a sports injury, you may be searching for a safe and effective way to heal. At Luker Acupuncture in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, we specialize in orthopedic acupuncture — a modern approach to acupuncture that focuses on relieving musculoskeletal pain and restoring mobility. Patients looking for acupuncture for pain relief in Broken Arrow often find this treatment especially effective.

What Is Orthopedic Acupuncture?
Unlike traditional acupuncture, which focuses on balancing energy meridians, orthopedic acupuncture is rooted in anatomy and orthopedic assessment. This style of treatment uses physical exams — such as palpation, range-of-motion testing, and orthopedic exams — to identify the exact cause of pain.

Orthopedic acupuncture often includes:

Motor point acupuncture to relax tight or overactive muscles
Trigger point acupuncture to release knots and reduce pain
Electroacupuncture in Broken Arrow to boost circulation and accelerate healing
Precise anatomical needling to restore function and mobility
By combining Eastern medicine with modern orthopedic knowledge, this technique helps patients recover faster and with less reliance on pain medications.

Acupuncture or Dry Needling?

With the rising popularity of dry needling many people ask me if I do it as well and if they are the same thing as acupuncture? Dry needling is essentially the needling of trigger points (knots) in muscle tissue which relieves a variety of pain issues. Acupuncture has a long tradition of using needles in sore areas, which we call Ashi points (translates to "that's it." )

The advantage of practicing acupuncture is that I incorporate dry needling (Ashi points) but also include distal points, which are areas located further from the pain source. Using these distal points greatly enhances the effect of the localized needling and increases pain relief.

In addition to having practiced Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma area for over 10 years, I have been a massage therapist for more than 16 years. Doing trigger point therapy as well as myofascial release has given me the ability to locate and release tight areas and complements acupuncture beautifully.

Combining these modalities gives me several options to find a solution to your pain. Please contact me for any questions you may have.

How does acupuncture help for pain relief?

by Jeff Luker

I am frequently asked exactly how acupuncture works to provide pain relief. Although there are several ways it helps, here are some of the most common.

1. Using a needle to stimulate nerve fibers, the brain releases pain-relieving beta-endorphins into the blood stream. These endogenous chemicals act as the body's own opioids, thus relieving pain.

2. Another theory proposes acupuncture changes cells in connective tissue around the pressure points in lasting ways that lead to less pain.

3. Further, it is theorized that certain acupoints stimulate the vagus nerve which runs between the colon and the brain stem, which in turn helps to reduce systemic inflammation.

Additionally, new research shows us, via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), how the brain responds to needling specific points on the body. This is fascinating new evidence and hopefully will continue to help us learn more about acupuncture's effect on our health.
